Where do you live?

Pensacola, Florida

What do you do?

I create social media strategies to create brand awareness and exposure for Hire Served. I also love to create social media graphics in my free time for the Hire Served social media channels.

Why do you love it?

I have a business degree but have always been drawn to marketing and social media from a young age. I have personally created a profile on almost every social media platform imaginable (Xanga, Myspace, you name it). Now that businesses in the modern world heavily rely on this tool to reach new customers, I felt that I could bring my passion for writing, marketing, and graphics all into one job. I also have the freedom to work from wherever I want which is a HUGE plus in the military lifestyle.

How did you get here?

That’s a tough question. I have never had a direct path to marketing and social media, like some of my peers. I obtained my degree in International Business and also played NCAA Division I golf. Not exactly a path that screams, “I’m going into marketing.” I interned as a reporter in Washington, D.C. once out of college and even had the chance to work on the National Communications team for a 2016 presidential campaign. In my spare time, I would volunteer to help companies build their social media profiles and realized I loved studying how businesses grew their national presence on platforms like Instagram and Facebook.

I believe social media strategy is perfect for me and the military lifestyle. I can work remotely and constantly use skills that I learned from all the different jobs and roles that I’ve had throughout my life. I’ve used my writing and research skills that I learned while working on a national political campaign. I’ve used my photography skills that I learned photographing my travels around the United States and Internationally. And I’ve used my knowledge of the power of “positive thinking” from my days competing in collegiate athletics. I’ve always tried my best to recognize my skills, own them and put them to use in a career that travels with me.

Advice for military spouses aspiring to work remotely?

Don’t give up on your dream! It may seem like remote jobs are impossible to find, but they’re out there. I once had a recruiter tell me “good luck sweetie” during an info session while I was searching for extra remote work – and I decided right then and there to prove her wrong. A week later I found Jean and her company Hire Served through Madskills. HINT: Madskills is a great site to start looking for remote work.

I tell fellow spouses to spend a few days researching remote careers and the different resources offered online for finding remote careers, then list opportunities that fit their skills and needs and then apply! Convince employers that you can transition your skills into becoming a rock star employee. I highly recommend a killer cover letter. *Wink* *Wink*. Last, but not least, always remain confident, even if you don’t feel like it. You would be surprised how far you can go when you choose confidence over defeat!

MadSkills is a one-stop source for military spouse talent. The interface is easy to use and the applicants I’ve received to jobs I’ve posted have been highly qualified.
